Debates are a key element of the ‘Select’ component. It provides a platform for voters to listen to candidates and ask questions on their promises and plans. Benue governorship debates was organized to engage the governorship candidates and ascertain which of the aspirants has an in-depth understanding of the issues facing Benue State with good policies to solve those issue.

The following candidates were invited but didn’t attend the debate:
- Samuel Ortom (PDP)
Caleb Nyikwagh of AAC was also invited but declared support for Mr. Ortom of PDP on the day of debate.
Nevertheless, the following 4 governorship candidates participated in the debate:
- Emmanuel Jime (APC)
- John Tseayo (APGA)
- Frederick Ikyaan (PRP)
- Stephen Akuma (NCP)
The debate commenced at 8pm and the opening remarks for the debate were delivered by Paul Morgan of True-Talk Debate. The debate was moderated by Solomon Terver Iorpev and Ngozi Alaegbu.
On Saturday, March 9th, the people of Benue State went to the polls to elect their democratically elected governor. The election was inconclusive and a supplementary election was conducted on March 23rd. Mr. Samuel Ortom won with 434,473 votes while his closest opponent, Emmanuel Jime had 345,155 votes.
Emmanuel Jime rejected the results and promised to challenge it in the tribunal.
