Driving Active Citizenship: Reflections on CIMUN’s Opportunity

Driving Active Citizenship: Reflections on CIMUN’s Opportunity Fair at the 4th Session

Greetings, everyone!

We know you’ve been curious about what we’ve been up to lately, so it’s time to fill you in on all the exciting happenings. Amongst our many activities, we’re thrilled to share the highlights of our participation and engagement at the 4th session of the Covenant International Model United Nations (CIMUN), which took place from June 5th to June 10th.

This year, under the theme of “Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable, and Sustainable Societies,” we had the privilege of joining forces with esteemed organizations like Ideation Hub Africa, and Susty Vibes to support and grace the opportunity and career fair during the MUN experience.

During our allotted time at the Opportunity Fair, we emphasized the importance of citizen engagement in our country’s affairs. Our message resonated with the young and vibrant audience as we reflected on the recently concluded Nigeria elections, stressing the significance of translating social media activism into tangible action—by showing up to cast their votes and holding elected officials accountable long after the elections.

We underscored the need for citizens to actively engage with all levels of government and understand the different tiers responsible for addressing specific concerns and challenges. For instance, venting and criticizing the President on social media about issues like poor drainage systems or deteriorating road conditions in your area may not be the most effective approach. These matters fall within the purview of the local government office, making it crucial to direct concerns to the appropriate authorities.

The event culminated in a remarkable outcome, as numerous young citizens signed up as volunteers and discovered a newfound interest in ensuring that elected officials are held in check, ultimately striving to transform Nigeria into the country we all aspire it to be.

Phew! Now you’re up to speed with all the latest updates. It’s time to go out there and become an active citizen, making a positive impact in our society!
