#ThursdayTalks March 2025 Edition
On this edition of our #ThursdayTalks, we discussed “Suspended Voices, Silenced Mandates: What Next for Nigeria’s Democracy?”
Speakers:
Opeyemi Adamolekun – Executive Director, EiE Nigeria
Peter Aguebor – Executive Director, Budgit Nigeria
Chidi Odinkalu – Nigerian human right activist
Tolulope Adeleru-Balogun– Journalist, award-winning radio/tv host (Moderator)
The discussion centred on the troubling trend of elected officials being arbitrarily removed from office, from the political crisis in Rivers State to the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Chidi Odinkalu emphasised that democracy is rooted in popular sovereignty, but when elected officials are removed at will, power shifts from the people to political elites. He warned that the judiciary is being manipulated to enable these abuses while citizens remain fearful of speaking out.
Opeyemi Adamolekun highlighted the weakening of opposition parties, stressing that Nigeria needs a strong and vocal opposition to challenge the ruling party and hold leaders accountable.
Seun Onigbinde pointed out that many politicians, regardless of party, are more focused on securing personal benefits than building a movement for real change.
A key question raised was whether the 2027 elections will be free and fair. The consensus? It depends on citizens demanding accountability now. The conversation also addressed the role of fear in silencing dissent, with Odinkalu reminding Nigerians that collective action is the antidote—“If we all come out en masse, they can’t frighten us.”
The discussion reinforced the need for active citizen participation. Democracy thrives when people hold their leaders accountable. To stay informed and engaged, visit www.shineyoureye.org to find details of your National Assembly members.
