Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti: The Collective Action Project

On June 12th, Democracy Day, the powerful story of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the fearless Nigerian educator and activist who led the Abeokuta Women’s Riot against colonial oppression and taxation in the 1940s, will inspire citizens to unite and raise their voices for change. The Collective Action Project, a program by Enough is Enough Nigeria – in partnership with BAP Productions, Silverbird Cinemas, and Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), brings the acclaimed biopic “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” to audiences across Lagos, Ogun, and Abuja.
Through immersive screenings and thought-provoking conversations, this transformative experience aims to reignite the enduring spirit of activism embodied by Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s iconic leadership. Her fearless defiance against colonial oppression sparked a revolution, serving as a resounding reminder that true power rests with the people – and can only be actualized through collective action.

By bringing her remarkable story to an inspired audience, we hope to foster an engaged and empowered citizenry committed to shaping a more just and equitable future for our nation”, stated EiE Nigeria’s Executive Director, ‘Yemi Adamolekun.
The Collective Action Project holds on June 12th with screenings of the biopic at the following venues: Lagos: Silverbird Cinemas, Victoria Island – 5 PM, Abuja: Silverbird Cinemas, Central Business District – 5 PM and Abeokuta: OOPL Cinemas, Aje Palace – 12 PM
Following the screenings, dynamic panel discussions will explore the enduring relevance of grassroots movements like the Abeokuta Women’s Union and effective strategies for mobilization and civic engagement in contemporary Nigeria. Amongst the confirmed panelists are renowned voices such as Seun Onigbinde – Global Director, BudgIT, Victoria Oladipo – Founder, LearnPolitics, Emmanuella Azu – Acting Executive Director, WARDC and Idara Michael, National Vice President, Southwest 1, JCI Nigeria.
The events are open to the general public with discounted tickets available at 5,000 naira only. Attendees can expect a truly immersive experience, with opportunities for open dialogue, calls to action, and access to curated resources on active citizenship and the “Office of the Citizen” initiative.
With media support from Women Radio and The Cable, The Collective Action Project promises to be a powerful and transformative experience, igniting the flame of active citizenship and paving the way for a more just and fair Nigeria.

Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center (WARDC) (wardcnigeria.org) is a women’s rights organization in Nigeria, that provides pro bono legal services for women victims of gender-based violence and other women’s rights abuse. WARDC since its inception has prosecuted over 450 cases in court, instituted four class actions, and received an average of six women every week, for legal and socio-counseling on matters of gender-based violence and other civil matters that affect women. It has also established 42 paralegal communities across Nigeria.
