Adejoke Bakare Becomes First Black Female Michelin-Starred Chef in the UK!

Nigerian-born culinary talent Adejoke Bakare

Nigerian-born culinary talent Adejoke Bakare has made history as the first Black woman in the United Kingdom to receive a Michelin Star — one of the most prestigious awards in the culinary world. Her restaurant, Chishuru, was among 18 UK establishments honoured with a star in the 2024 Michelin Guide.

Located in central London, Chishuru began in 2020 as a humble pop-up in Brixton, South London. What started as a short-term project soon gained massive attention for its bold West African flavours, innovative techniques, and intimate dining experience. The restaurant quickly rose in popularity, eventually establishing a permanent spot in Fitzrovia — and now, a well-deserved place on the world’s fine dining map.

Adejoke’s achievement is not only monumental for her but also for representation in the food industry. She is only the second Black woman in the world to earn a Michelin Star, following in the footsteps of trailblazers who have long fought for diversity in professional kitchens.

Despite having no formal chef training, Adejoke’s cooking journey began with home catering and supper clubs. Her dishes are a celebration of her Yoruba heritage, combining traditional techniques and ingredients with a refined, modern approach. From pepper soup to fermented rice pancakes and grilled meats, Chishuru’s menu is a vibrant showcase of West African cuisine — elevated and unforgettable.

Michelin Stars are awarded by a secretive team of inspectors who anonymously dine at restaurants around the world, assessing quality, creativity, consistency, and value. That Adejoke’s work has captured their attention speaks volumes about her mastery and passion.

Keep winning, Adejoke!
