Social Media Week Lagos 2020
In a world where everybody is connected, everybody is at risk. Social media has helped to improve political participation and citizens engagement with public servants in Nigeria, however there are some danger posed by the misuse/abuse of it.
Some of the dangers of social media platforms are spread of fake news and inciting comments/hate speech which can heat up the polity.
There should be consequences for those actions, but it must follow due process and not the current way we go about it such that citizens are indiscriminately arrested and detained without due process and charging them to court. Cybercrime Act is also an instrument of oppression in the hands of the state.
This session will shed light on diverse perspectives on the regulation of social media. and share international best practices on regulation.
