Kelechi Ndukwe, a distinguished officer in the United States Navy

Kelechi Ndukwe, a distinguished officer in the United States Navy, has made history as the first person of Nigerian descent to command a US Navy warship.

In April 2021, Commander Ndukwe assumed leadership of the USS Halsey (DDG-97), an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. This significant milestone came after years of dedicated service, including a role as the ship’s Executive Officer (second-in-command) prior to his promotion.

Born to Nigerian parents, Ndukwe’s remarkable journey in the US Navy began in 2003. He holds a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the US Naval War College, a testament to his academic and professional excellence.

Before taking command of the USS Halsey, Ndukwe also served in the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest-ranking military position in the United States, highlighting the level of trust and responsibility placed in him.

Congratulations, Kelechi!
