Zonal Public Hearing

The Chairman and Members of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution cordially invite the General Public, Civil Society/Interest Groups, Professional Bodies and other interested persons to a 2-Day Zonal Public Hearing on “The Proposed Further Alteration on the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999,” holding simultaneously in the six geo-political zones of the nation.

Issues to be considered at the Public Hearing include:

  1. Devolution of Powers
  2. Creation of More States
  3. Recognition of the Six Geo-political Zones in the Constitution
  4. Role for Traditional Rulers
  5. Local government
  6. Taking out of the following from the Constitution:
    1. Land Use Act
    2. NYSC Act
    3. Code of Conduct
  7. Fiscal Federalism
  8. Amendment of Provisions relating to Amendment of the Constitution; State Creation and Boundary Adjustment to remove ambiguities
  9. Immunity Clause
  10. Nigerian Police
  11. Judiciary
  12. Executive
  13. Rotation of Executive Offices among Senatorial Districts of a State
  14. Gender and Special Group
  15. Mayoral Status for the Federal Capital territory Administration
  16. Residency and Indigene Provisions
  17. Any other matter that will promote good governance and will improve the Nigerian State, but which requires amendment to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution
