Oluwatimilehin Doko, a 24-year-old pharmacy student at the University of Lagos, has etched his name in history by becoming the youngest-ever winner of the African Scrabble Championship. He clinched the title at the 15th edition of the tournament held in Kigali, Rwanda, from October 24 to 27, 2024 .

Competing against 87 players from eight countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Gambia, Mauritius, Zambia, and South Africa, Doko demonstrated exceptional skill and strategy. He secured victory with a record of 25 wins and 7 losses, amassing an impressive 2,244 cumulative points .

His journey to the championship title was marked by a series of notable performances. He began the tournament with a commanding win over Godwin Murungi of Uganda (487-423) and maintained a strong position throughout the rounds. In the decisive Round 31, Doko defeated fellow Nigerian Abdulmumin Jimoh with a score of 574-422, ensuring his lead with a game to spare .

This victory not only highlights Doko’s individual talent but also underscores the strength of Team Ogun, which had multiple players finishing in top positions. For instance, Mumeen Jimoh secured fourth place, and David Ojih, the African Youth Champion, finished sixth .

His success serves as an inspiration to aspiring players and showcases the depth of talent emerging from Nigeria.
