British-Nigerian travel content creator Pelumi Nubi has made history by becoming the first Black woman to drive solo from London, United Kingdom, to Lagos, Nigeria. Embarking on this ambitious journey on January 30, 2024, Pelumi traversed 17 countries over 68 days, covering approximately 6,213 miles (10,000 kilometers) in her trusty purple Peugeot 107, affectionately named “Lumi”.
Her route took her through diverse terrains and cultures, including France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and finally into Nigeria. Despite facing challenges such as a car accident in Côte d’Ivoire and navigating complex border crossings, Pelumi’s determination never wavered.
Upon her arrival in Lagos on April 7, 2024, Pelumi was met with a hero’s welcome at the University of Lagos. The Lagos State Government honored her remarkable achievement by appointing her as a Tourism Ambassador and awarding her a new car and a house.
Pelumi’s journey was more than just a personal accomplishment; it was a statement of empowerment. By undertaking this solo expedition, she aimed to inspire Black women and other underrepresented groups to pursue adventurous travel and break societal barriers. Her story has been featured in various media outlets, including Forbes and Condé Nast Traveler, highlighting the significance of her feat in promoting diversity and representation in travel.
We are cheering you on, Pelumi!
