The Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, have triumphantly secured their spot at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, marking their return to the Olympic stage after a 16-year hiatus. Their last appearance was at the Beijing 2008 Games.
The Falcons clinched their Olympic berth by defeating South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 1-0 on aggregate in the final round of the African qualifiers. A crucial first-leg victory in Abuja, courtesy of a 43rd-minute penalty by Rasheedat Ajibade, set the tone. They then held South Africa to a goalless draw in Pretoria, showcasing defensive resilience to seal their qualification.
In Paris, Nigeria has been drawn into Group C, facing formidable opponents: Spain, Japan, and Brazil. Their campaign kicks off against Brazil on July 25 in Bordeaux. Despite the challenging group, the Super Falcons are poised to make a significant impact, building on their impressive performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they reached the Round of 16.
With a blend of experienced players and emerging talents, the team is determined to showcase their prowess on the global stage.
Keep flying high, Falcons!
