Lieutenant Changfe Maigari has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first female pilot in the Nigerian Navy since its establishment in 1964. Her groundbreaking accomplishment was officially recognized on December 13, 2024, during the Nigerian Navy’s Ceremonial Sunset and Awards Night held at the Naval Training Command Headquarters (HQ NAVTRAC) in Ebube-Eleme, Rivers State.
Born in Kaduna and hailing from Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Maigari’s aspiration to become a military pilot was inspired by her upbringing in a military environment; her father served as an officer in the Nigerian Air Force. In 2016, she graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as part of the first cohort of 20 female regular cadets and was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant. Her exemplary performance earned her the Gold Medal Navy Award for being the best graduating cadet in academics.
Following her commissioning, Maigari served aboard the Nigerian Navy Ship Unity, gaining valuable operational experience. In 2019, she completed the Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course, emerging as the overall best in her class. Her dedication and perseverance culminated in her successful completion of basic pilot training, after which she was awarded the prestigious ‘Pilot Wing’ during the 2024 Ceremonial Sunset.
Maigari’s achievement has been widely celebrated. The Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, lauded her accomplishment, stating that it serves as an inspiration for young women across Nigeria to pursue their dreams despite challenges. Similarly, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang commended Maigari for her courage and dedication, describing her as a worthy ambassador of the state and a role model for aspiring female officers.
Keep the jet flying, Maigari!
