The Nigeria women’s basketball team, famously known as D’Tigress, has made history at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, held from July 26 to August 11, 2024. The team became the first African basketball team, male or female, to qualify for the Olympic quarterfinals, a feat that has never been accomplished by any other African team in the sport.
This historic milestone was led by Coach Rena Wakama, the team’s first-ever female head coach, marking yet another significant first in Nigeria’s sporting journey. Under her guidance, D’Tigress secured a 79–70 victory over Canada at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, sealing their place in the last eight.
Even before that triumph, D’Tigress had already turned heads by securing their first Olympic win in 20 years with a powerful 75–62 victory over Australia in their opening match. The team’s performance at Paris 2024 not only ended a long Olympic drought but also positioned Nigeria on the global map of women’s basketball excellence.
This is more than a sporting win—it’s a powerful statement about perseverance, leadership, and African excellence.
We are beyond proud of D’Tigress for showing the world what Nigerian women can do on the global stage.
Keep flying high, D’Tigresses!
