Officer Cadet Owowoh Princess Oluchukwu has etched her name in history as the first Nigerian female officer to graduate from the United Kingdom’s prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS). At just 24 years old, she was among the 135 Officer Cadets who completed the intensive 44-week training program, culminating in the Sovereign’s Parade on April 12, 2024, in Camberley, Surrey. The parade was graced by the head of the French Army, Général d’armée Pierre Schill, who represented His Majesty King Charles III at the ceremony.
This achievement underscores a significant milestone in the longstanding military ties between the UK and Nigeria, with Princess Owowoh becoming the 190th Nigerian graduate from RMAS.
Her journey began in 2018 when she enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna. Demonstrating exceptional leadership and academic prowess, she ascended through the ranks: from Cadet Lance Corporal in her second year to Cadet Sergeant in her fourth year, and ultimately to Company Senior Under Officer Charlie (CSUO C) in her fifth year. Remarkably, she became one of the first women to hold the CSUO position at the NDA.
In her fourth year, she completed the Academics Wing of the commissioning course, earning first-class honours in Biological Sciences.
Following her graduation, Princess Owowoh was promoted to Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army and was assigned to the military intelligence unit upon her return to Nigeria.
Her achievement has garnered widespread recognition. First Lady Oluremi Tinubu lauded her as a beacon of resilience and an inspiration to Nigerian youth. The Nigerian Army also commended her for her exemplary performance, highlighting her as a role model for aspiring female officers.
Princess Owowoh’s groundbreaking accomplishment not only paves the way for more Nigerian women in military leadership but also stands as a testament to her dedication, perseverance, and the unwavering support of her mentors and family.
You are a trailblazer, Princess!
